Arsenal Take Lead

It was a day of cheering the rivals, as the English Premiership title race continued  on Saturday. Arsenal faced off against Manchester City in the City of Manchester Stadium in an early kick off, whereas Manchester United travelled to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham Hotspur. It would have come as no surprise if supporters from both Arsenal and Man U were rooting for their local rivals in their respective matches.

Emmanuel Adebayor continued his rich vein of form in the league, as he score twice in an emphatic 3-0 away win for the Gunners. Eduardo scored a stunning goal in between the Adebayor goals. Manchester City never looked like troubling the visitors, and Sven Goran Eriksson had very little positives to pick up from a game in which his side was clearly the second best.

The double strike took Adebayor’s goal tally of the season to 21. After a thoroughly professional display in which Arsenal displayed their trademark style of football, full of deft passes and pace, all Arsene Wenger had to do was wait and watch the Manchester United match.

Before the match, United had dominated over the spurs for six years.  The red devils had scored goals in abundance against the north London club; nine in the last season. Just last Sunday, they won 3-1 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup fourth round match. But the Spurs would have nothing of history, and decided that they would more than just make up the numbers.

Throughout the entire game, it was clear, and surprising, that the home team looked the better of the two. Dimitar Berbatov opened the scoring in the 20th minute, albeit a little luckily, but there was no denying the fact that the Spurs deserved the lead. United never really came close to scoring , despite a spirited second half performance. Tottenham, in the meantime, caused loads of concern with the pace of Aaron Lennon and Steed Malbranque, coupled with the clinical touches of Berbatov and Tom Huddlestone.

Sir Alex Ferguson grew more and more desperate as time wore on, and made several tactical changes; one involving playing Rooney as a winger. But at the end of 90 minutes, the scoreline still read 1-0. It was only in the 93rd minute that Carlos Tevez grabbed an equalizer, and with it, a solitary point for United. But the draw meant that United slipped to second spot in the standings.

So, it now seems that the Spurs have done a huge favour to the Gunners, something the Blues could not replicate for the Red Devils. With a two point advantage, Arsenal will be hoping that their winning streak continues till the end of the season. Man U however, will have other plans, and they have enough quality to bounce back emphatically from defeat. The title race is on between two Champion teams, and both know that a draw at this stage is as good as defeat. Who will eventually be crowned champions? Time will tell. Sit back and enjoy the action.

Mourinho Leaves Chelsea..

Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho

After three years at the club, after 2 premier league titles, 2 league cups, 1 FA cup and 1 FA Community Shield, and an unbeaten-league-home-record later… Jose Mourinho has finally left Chelsea.

Not that it was completely unexpected, but the team players must have been pretty shocked by the turn of events in such a short span. Most of last year’s premiership was filled with rumors and facts about Jose Mourinho’s fights with Roman Abrohamovic, the Chelsea team owner. It even ended with a news reporting saying that Mourinho would leave at the end of the season. Mourinho later cleared doubts regarding his future at Stanford Bridge, stating that there would only be two ways for him to leave Chelsea: if Chelsea were not to offer him a new contract in June 2010, and if Chelsea were to sack him.. Apparently he never mentioned way 3: leaving in the middle of the season..!

Whatever be the reason of his exit, one cannot dispute his amazing statistics with Chelsea: Played 185 Won 124 Lost 21 Drawn 40 with a percentage of 88.65%.. However the most glorious fact about his life at Chelsea was his impeccable home record in the premiership.. 67 matches unbeaten, or in simpler words, Mourinho has never faced a premiership home defeat at Chelsea..

Chelsea have got to recover from this shock as fast as they can, because they have Manchester United up against them.. and the current league champions are in no way going to help out Chelsea from their time of gloom… And about Mourinho, he should get a manager’s position at another club with relative ease, since he commands amazing qualities, and of course some even more amazing statistics…

Worst Premiership Start

The EPL season has kicked off, and there seems to be nothing but loads of bad news for Manchester United supporters. 2 points from 3 games is’nt exactly how the champions would have wanted to start the season. This also incidentally is the worst start by a defending champion in a season. But, as they say, there still is a long way to go, and every possibility that a grand fightback is in the offing. In any case, they are 17th now, and there is only one way to go: up.

What seems to irk fans the most is the manner in which the games have panned out. Against reading, in the frist match of the season, United kept attacking all the way. What was missing however was that elusive goal. It’s a very rare phenomenon: goalless draws featuring Man U. Sure, Evra missed an oppprtunity begging to be taken, and Reading hardly came close to scoring, but still the match ended goalless.

Portsmouth was always going to be a tricky affair, and that was proved. 1-1 at the end, but again, it was United all the way. Save that Benjani strike, Pompei had nothing to show in front of goal. And yet, all the champs got was a draw. Now the presence of a predator-like striker was being sorely missed, somebody like Van Nistelrooy.

The manchester derby always promises to be close, but this time, United lost 1-0.Again, it was a match they dominated from the word go. Some missed chances, (Scholes, Tevez, Evra) a crossbar hit (Vidic) and a deflected goal (from Vidic) later, Man U were staring at a long season of playing catch-up to the big 3.

Now the focus turns to Spurs.Theres no Rooney, and Ronaldo will thankfully make a return. But united need a goal machine- somebody who will rarely venture out of the 6 yard box, and convert all chances that are  created. Somebody who can tap in goals, the kind of ones Tevez missed last time round. Roumour has it that United are looking for short term replacements for Rooney, and rumour also has it that its goin to be Nicolas Anelka. In any case, they had better get this season off and running with 3 points againts the Spurs, or else they may just need to kiss a consecutive premiership title goodbye.

Gunners Fightback!!!!!

It was a dissapointing season for Arsenal last year, but this year the story is differnt.Without thier talismanic striker Thierry Henry they are said to be out of the top 4 finishers in the ongoing Preimiership.Thier new signing Euduardo Da Silva was missing on 12th June due to some injury.Emmanuel Adebayor was out due to calf injury and the worst thing was that thier experienced player Gilberto Silva was having a Shoulder Problem. So the entire team depended on Fabregas and Rosicky to Handle the situation with William Gallas and Kolo Toure doing the rest.
Arsenal a very ugly nightmare when they faced Fulham on the 12th of August.Fulham were leading 1-0 due to a misjudgement by goalkeeper Lehman which made the debutant striker of Fulham,David Healy to score his 1st Preimiership goal.Arsenal were denied a penalty when Alexander Hleb was brought down in the box.But Arsenal were lookin strong with their sharp passes though they couldn’t find the net till the Half-time.It was then that in the 83rd minute when kolo Toure was fouled and the refree awarded Arsenal a penalt.Robin Van Persie scored the penalty. In the tense moments Arsenal have always achieved success and they didn’t dissapoint their fans in front of the Emirates. The second goal came in the dying moments of the match when Hleb had scored it beautifully with a Theo Walcott pass.
So it’s a tough competition for the defending champions Man Utd and also Chelsea.Later that day Chelsea sealed the victory over Birmingham with a 3-2 finish, thanks to last goal by Micheal Essien. However ManU had a draw with the last years Surprise package Reading F.C.So there’s a lot more football to come over the next few months.Let us see if ManU can defend thier Title.

Man-U Wins Community Shield on Penalties

Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was the star yesterday, as he  saved three penalty kicks as Man-U beat Chelsea in a shootout in the Community Shield. The Community Shield happens to be the traditional curtain-raiser to English soccer’s Premier League season.

The teams had tied 1-1 at Wembley after 90 minutes before going straight to the shootout.

Van Der Sar saved penalties from Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Phillips. Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech failed to get near any of the United shots from Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney.  “I was 5-2 down in penalty shootouts in my career so this makes it 5-3,” Van Der Sar said. “We deserved it. We played the better football, we had more chances than them.”

This is the record 16th time United has either won or shared the English season opener between the league champions and FA Cup holders, which does not count in the Premier League standings. Before the introduction of shootouts in 1993, teams held the title for six months each after draws.

Ryan Giggs had put United in the lead in the 35th minute before Florent Malouda made it 1-1 in the 45th.

The regular season starts next week. The same two teams played in the FA Cup final three months ago, with Chelsea winning 1-0 at the rebuilt Wembley Stadium.

“It’s a little revenge for the cup final and it’s a good start for the league for us,” Van Der Sar said.
